“Pure GTK” Emacs will now respect dark mode toggling for drawing the title bar and widgets

2 min readNov 2, 2025

My patch to enable GNU Emacs dark mode toggling in the “Pure GTK” build was just merged:

Even if you turn off the menu bar and toolbar like many Emacs enthusiasts, the Emacs title bar (under Wayland since apps draw their own title bars there unlike X11) and other GTK widgets like popups remained light colored even in dark mode before this patch.

Emacs will now automatically select the right GTK theme on boot, and automatically toggle it with the rest of your GNOME desktop environment, or whatever else you use. I believe other desktop environments like KDE will also set the GTK theme to dark mode to match the KDE desktop. And window manager users should have a CLI and text file workflow to accomplish this.

Please try it in the Emacs master branch and reach out to me with any feedback at me@enzu.ru
